Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction surgery is the surgical procedure done usually right after a partial or full mastectomy. This replaces the original breast by creating a mound or breast shape in place of where the original breast was located.

Breast reconstructive surgery may be done during the excision of the cancer cells or at a later date without any issue.

At Marina Plastic Surgery, our breast reconstruction surgeons hold your privacy in the highest regard. We offer high-quality services discreetly with results aimed at improving your self-confidence and self-esteem.

What to Expect

An initial consultation will be done to assess what you essentially need for functionality with a secondary assessment by our breast lift surgeon done for the aesthetic purpose of the operation.

Pictures may be taken for comparison purposes or for the surgeon to assess how best to shape your breasts.

Your medical history will be examined to ensure that you are physically able to undergo the operation.

There are several techniques employed in breast reconstructive surgery. Here are some examples.

Breast reconstruction is a complex procedure that may require several sessions. A tissue expander may be put in place to prepare the area where implants are going to be placed. For breast reconstruction with the use of breast implants, please check breast enlargement procedure.

This procedure involves the insertion of a silicone-based bag of gel. This creates the basic mound that your breast reconstruction surgeon will work on.

Flap reconstruction is the second type of breast reconstruction and may use the latissimus dorsi muscle or abdominal tissue to create the basic mound. Tissues gathered from the back, buttocks and thigh may also be used.

A drain will be installed to syphon off excess fluid and binding will be used to keep your breast in place for the first few hours after the operation.

Nipple reconstruction will need to be done after breast reconstructive surgery.

After Surgery / Recovery

As with all types of surgical procedures, caring for the areas where sutures were made is the highest priority. Following your breast reconstruction surgeon’s instruction for the proper care of affected areas is highly advised.

Pain management can be administered by hospital staff or by the patient. It can be oral or through intravenous methods.

Physical therapy will be introduced gradually for muscle strengthening and fortifying the areas operated on.

Swelling may occur. Use ice packs for pain relief. Wrap ice in several layers of cloth to avoid ice burn.

Loss of sensation may occur up to 3 months while the local nerves heal.

Other risks associated with breast reconstructive surgery are:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Seroma or collection of fluid
  • Necrosis
  • Hernia

Talk to your breast reconstruction surgeon to discuss the risks associated with the operation.
